EUSD Transition to Common Core State Standards

As you may know, the State of California has joined 45 other states and the District of Columbia in approving national K-12 academic standards for math and language arts called Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  The new standards are designed to prepare every student for success in college and their careers. Our district is well on our way with our transition to the CCSS.  To learn more about the CCSS and what you can expect for your child in the future, click here.

Open House

The weather was just perfect and the parent turn-out was fantastic.

Thank you to the teachers for doing such a great job of showcasing our incredible student work!!!

Thank you for all of the volunteers who helped make the night a success

Bike To School Day was a great success!  Thank you to the parents who helped the students get to school safely!  Every studetn had a helmet on, and all riders received a Bike Safety Coloring Book.

Wild Things   The Wild Things rescue animals came to Greenhills last week for informative and engaging school-wide assemblies.  Our students look forward to this every year and we always wonder which animals Gabe will bring. . This year's guests included an alligator, a hawk, and a porcupine!

A Touch of Understanding

Last Friday all Second Grade students at Greenhills participated in a program called: A Touch of Understanding (ATOU)

The program provides disability awareness for students to understand the challenges associated with disabilities and to accept and respect all individuals.

A Touch of Understanding is a nonprofit organization comprised of dedicated individuals, some with disabilities and some without. These dedicated volunteers come together to form a strong team working to help students look beyond the disability, the wheelchair, the braces, the unpredictable behavior and see the person.  The program works by turning negative attitudes into positive ones and facilitating stronger interpersonal skills within the next generation.

Here a student wrote their name in Braille and learned how sight challenged people learn to read with their fingers.

Town Hall Meeting
The District-wide Town Hall meeting was held on February 20th.  The meeting is an opportunity to gain a better understanding of: Proposition 30, the state budget, the financial condition of our district and much more.  For more information, please refer to the Eureka Schools Foundation Website (www.eurekaschoolsfoundation.org), watch one of the video links below.

Special thanks to the GBHS Media Department for recording the event.  You can view the entire meeting at the following link:

Greenhills School students once again shine on the standardized tests, resulting in an API of 912

a gain of 24 points over last year!

As a school community, we hold high expectations for students to have academic and social success, striving for growth in a safe, nurturing environment.

Our teachers are a caring, dedicated and talented group of professionals. We develop an educational program that encompasses each curricular area with a focus on individual student success.  Our Professional Learning Community planning time is used for discussing specific student needs, curricular focus, and avenues for improvement.  We believe each and every child deserves the very best from us and we share that value with our supportive and involved parent community.  Together our successes can be seen in test scores, in the classroom, and in the faces of the children.

Eureka Union District students demonstrate sustained outstanding achievement when compared to neighboring districts.  Once again, Eureka Union ranks first when compared to districts throughout Placer County with an impressive API of 918, an unprecedented district wide score.  The district is extremely proud that all seven in the district schools have achieved an API of 898 or higher.

JOG-A-Thon Was a smashing success!

CONGRATULATIONS GREENHILLS!

Second year in a row!

Dear Principal Towne,

On behalf of California Business for Education Excellence, I write to congratulate you on the outstanding success your school has made in raising student academic achievement.  After an extensive analysis of student achievement data for every public school in California, your school stood well above the rest in getting your students to grade level proficiency and beyond.

It is for that reason we have named you a California Business for Education Excellence Honor Roll School for 2012.

The list of Honor Roll schools continues to grow thanks to the hard work and effective practices of thousands of excellent principals, teachers and support personnel in our public schools.

This is a testament to the relentless focus on results for students that you, your staff and your peers have shown over the years.  It is also a strong statement about how success is spreading in public schools across the state.

As an Honor Roll school you will be recognized in local and state media as well as events across the state.  Your success story will provide hope and direction for many other public schools -- that all students can reach high levels of academic achievement.

Our heartfelt congratulations and thank you for a job well done.  We look forward to telling your story and promoting your success.

 Sincerely,

James S. Lanich, Ph.D.

President

Summer Reading Program

Each student who reads, and logs their reading, over the summer is entitled to attend the Summer Reading Celebration.  We have a raffle drawing, enjoy a cold sweet treat, and talk about the importance of being a reader!  Congratulations students!

This annual event is sponsored by our PTC. Thank you Susan Weinstein for your leadership on this event!

The Rotary Club of Granite Bay donated $1,000 to Greenhills Elementary School to support the "Greenhills Reads" program.  This "whole school book-club"  program encourages every student at Greenhills to read the same book at the same time.  Students are assigned chapters each week and parents read to the students to keep up with the schedule. The final chapter is celebrated in a schoolwide assembly.  This donation will allow Greenhills to provide a copy of this year's book to each of the students.  Featured in the photo is (left to right): Rotary President John Milburn, Carol Sue Acres, Greenhills Principal Peter Towne, and Rotary Chairperson Mike Baker.
